Client Spotlight: How Conservation Legacy’s Board Aligned Organizational Vision with Mission
As organizations grow and evolve, revisiting your mission can be a powerful opportunity not because something is broken, but because clarity fuels stronger decision-making, deeper alignment, and long-term impact.
To that end, Conservation Legacy, a national nonprofit, partnered with Pathway Group on a board and leadership engagement focused on mission clarity as a governance practice.
Building on a strong vision
Conservation Legacy entered its work with Pathway Group with a clear and compelling vision for the future. The engagement created intentional space for board and leadership to step back and reflect on how the mission (the how behind the organization’s work) supported that vision in practice.
Vision defines the destination.
Mission guides how the organization shows up each day to move toward it.
By exploring these questions collectively, the board and leadership team strengthened shared understanding across roles and reinforced the mission’s role as a key organizational strategy tool.
Mission-centered conversations
Led by Pathway partners Amberlie Phillips and Joelle Kanshepolsky, the project combined mission-focused reflection with governance training. Through facilitated discussion and breakout exercises, participants explored:
- What aspects of the current mission were serving the organization well
- How the mission supported decision-making and priorities
- Where alignment was strong across board and leadership
- How the mission could continue to guide the organization as it grows
These conversations helped deepen clarity and reaffirm stakeholders’ various roles in stewarding mission over time.
Mission as an anchor for long-term impact
When a mission is clearly understood and shared, it becomes an anchor helping boards and leaders navigate growth, opportunity, and change with confidence.
For Conservation Legacy, this work reinforced how mission supports:
- Strategic focus
- Effective governance conversations
- Consistent decision-making
Rather than being simply words on a page, the mission became a living reference point, grounding the day to day work for staff and board alike.
